It&#8217;s a full featured audio recording studio &#8211; you can mix up a song by using a wide array of loops, by recording your own virtual or real instruments or a combination of both! It&#8217;s also a great podcast creation tool.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to go beyond what I was able to present to you today, take a look at the <a href=\"http:\/\/help.apple.com\/garageband\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Garageband Lessons and Help page<\/a>. There is a <a href=\"http:\/\/acomp.stanford.edu\/tutorials\/garageband_audio_editing\" target=\"_blank\">full tutorial\/lesson you can use and adapt from Stanford<\/a>, as well as an entire\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/education\/docs\/Apple-Moviemakingcurriculum.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Curriculum for\u00a0Digital Media Creation<\/a>\u00a0from Apple (PDF).<\/p>\n<p>What sorts of learning projects and activities can you with audio and podcasting? Here are a few ideas from <a href=\"https:\/\/sedcclint.com\" target=\"_blank\">my training<\/a>\u00a0site:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tutorial<\/strong> \u2013 describe a step-by-step process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reporting<\/strong> \u2013 describe how a problem was identified and solved<\/li>\n<li><strong>Descriptive<\/strong> \u2013 paint a picture with words about a place, memory, or image<\/li>\n<li><strong>Biographical<\/strong> \u2013 capture the history of the \u201cOld Timer\u2019s\u201d with interviews about their life<\/li>\n<li><strong>Autobiographical<\/strong> &#8211; relate some of your own life story and discuss your family history<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tour Guide<\/strong> \u2013 make an audio tour of a local museum, describing the background of the exhibits as the patrons walk around<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reactionary<\/strong> \u2013 record your thoughts as you experience something for the first time<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conversational<\/strong> \u2013 gather a group together to discuss a topic of interest and record<\/li>\n<li><strong>Serial Storytelling<\/strong> \u2013 a series of classes each make up and record a chapter of a story<\/li>\n<li><strong>Screencast<\/strong> \u2013 Capture sound and screen shots as a process is explained on the computer about a piece of software or whats on the screen<\/li>\n<li><strong>Book Trailers<\/strong> \u2013 Instead of creating a movie trailer, have students create an interesting trailer for a book that has been read in class.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sedcclint.com\/?p=463\" target=\"_blank\">More podcasting resources and information at SEDCClint.com<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other helpful Garageband resources I found &#8216;Out There&#8217;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>**<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachingwithtech.net\/garageband-podcasting\/\" target=\"_blank\">Garageband &#8211; Podcasting<\/a> (contains video tutorials &#8211; a great place to start)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uen.org\/general_learner\/multimedia_resources.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">UEN Multimedia Resources for Teachers<\/a> (links to appropriate free images, audio, and video clips)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ilife\/garageband\/what-is.html\" target=\"_blank\">What Is Garageband?<\/a> from Apple<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/edapps.ca\/2012\/05\/14-ways-to-use-garageband-in-the-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\">14 Ways to Use Garageband in the Classroom<\/a> (contains video)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/prezi.com\/qyp1c2ri55jx\/garageband-in-the-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\">Garageband in the Classroom<\/a> (Prezi Presentation)<\/li>\n<li>Fun <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/d7a8iVOpgwM?t=1m38s\" target=\"_blank\">Solar System Wrap<\/a> project (YouTube video)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/discussions.apple.com\/thread\/4384600?start=0&amp;tstart=0\" target=\"_blank\">Remove duplicate Garageband loops<\/a> (a problem I had)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/us.cdn3.123rf.com\/168nwm\/simlik\/simlik0909\/simlik090900080\/5469065-loop.jpg?resize=101%2C89\" width=\"101\" height=\"89\" align=\"right\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Getting Started with Building Music from Loops<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">Launch Garageband, and choose New Project &#8211;&gt; Loops. Give it a name, and save it where you can find it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Tour the Interface: Add new track, edit tracks, show\/hide loops, track info, and media browser, play\/pause controls and metronome<\/li>\n<li>View the Loops browser, and browse for the loops you&#8217;ll use with the filter buttons. Click &#8216;Reset&#8217; to choose a new type of loop.<\/li>\n<li>To add a loop, just click and drag it into the Tracks area.\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t combine loops from different instruments on the same track!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Start with a beat, and build from there!<\/li>\n<li>Extend a loop \u00a0&#8211; hover over the top right corner of the loop &#8216;bubble&#8217; to see the circular arrow cursor. Click and drag until the loop is as long as you&#8217;d like.<\/li>\n<li>When your masterpiece is complete, save your work, and then use the Share menu to save your track as an AAC or MP3 in iTunes or Export as a stand-alone file<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Creating Podcasts with Garageband<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">File &#8211;&gt; New, New Project &#8211;&gt; Podcasts. Give it a name, and Create<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Need inspiration? You can find sample radio scripts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simplyscripts.com\/radio.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.genericradio.com\/library.php\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>You are presented with some default tracks:\n<ul>\n<li>The Podcast track will allow you to insert images to create an &#8216;Enhanced Podcast&#8217; &#8211; sort of like a narrated slide show<\/li>\n<li>Male Voice and Female Voice are used for recording the respective voices with a microphone<\/li>\n<li>The Jingles track is where you can bring in included sound effects, jingles and stingers to give the podcast some color, or to add some ambiance to your story.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Edit recordings &#8211; useful with voice recordings\n<ul>\n<li>Click the edit button &#8211; scissors button &#8211; to show an expanded waveform of the recording<\/li>\n<li>A tale of two halves &#8211; top half &#8216;squishes&#8217; waveform and mutes audio, bottom half you can select and crop\/delete the audio from the track entirely.<\/li>\n<li>Pitch can be adjusted, as well as AutoTune your audio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Want to create a video podcast? <a href=\"http:\/\/help.apple.com\/garageband\/index.html#gbnda199f7b6\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s how<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not enough microphones? Use <a href=\"http:\/\/audioboo.fm\/\" target=\"_blank\">Audioboo<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/audioboo.fm\/about\/widgets\" target=\"_blank\">about any mobile device<\/a> to act as a mobile recording studio. <a href=\"http:\/\/audioboo.fm\/\" target=\"_blank\">Audioboo<\/a> will save the recordings, make them available online, and even create a podcast RSS or iTunes feed.
