{"id":18,"date":"2011-05-18T22:14:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-18T22:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sedcclint.com\/a-view-from-the-field-why-cell-phones-make-se"},"modified":"2011-05-18T22:14:00","modified_gmt":"2011-05-18T22:14:00","slug":"a-view-from-the-field-why-cell-phones-make-se","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedcclint.com\/index.php\/2011\/05\/18\/a-view-from-the-field-why-cell-phones-make-se\/","title":{"rendered":"A View from the Field: Why Cell Phones Make Sense for Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"posterous_bookmarklet_entry\">\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p><em><br \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"vicky\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ctlonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/vicky.jpg?resize=97%2C140\" height=\"140\" align=\"left\" alt=\"vicky\" width=\"97\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Striving Readers&rsquo; technology grant allowed Bate Middle School (BMS) to step-up their instructional rigor and the motivational level of many students.&nbsp; Due to the financing we could not purchase iPod Touches, Response Systems or Interactive White Boards for every room.&nbsp; I was researching innovative 21<sup>st<\/sup> century best practices.&nbsp; I found several articles, and the book &ldquo;Toys to Tools,&rdquo; &nbsp;was mentioned in several articles.&nbsp; I ordered the book and it was everything the articles claimed.&nbsp; It was a very practical resource that contained many lessons for a variety of subjects.&nbsp; The goal of the book was to encourage educators to introduce cell phones to students as potential learning tools and lifelong professional tool, rather than viewing them solely as a social toy. Here&rsquo;s the Top Ten List of &ldquo;take-aways&rdquo; from the book, plus the cell phone user agreement and letter sent home to parents:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cell phones are not just toys; rather, they&rsquo;re essential tools students use to communicate with the world around them.<\/li>\n<li>Using a multiple literacy approach to classroom instruction enables students to understand, use, and critically evaluate the multi-modal tests of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century.<\/li>\n<li>In the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century, part of an educator&rsquo;s job is to help students navigate and stay safe in a world overflowing with technology and information.<\/li>\n<li>For students to be successful in the future they must learn how to use different literacy tools in various knowledge-building communities.<\/li>\n<li>The M-generation has the ability to multitask with a variety of media devices at one time.<\/li>\n<li>Students enjoy using their cell phones and they are highly motivated to interact with their cell phones during class.<\/li>\n<li>Most students have their cell phone with them.<\/li>\n<li>Students are growing up in a technology-enhanced community outside of school.&nbsp; If students develop their own communication and community through their media &ldquo;toys,&rdquo; educators need to bring those toys into educational activities so students can learn to use them as &ldquo;tools of knowledge.&rdquo;<\/li>\n<li>An educator&rsquo;s job includes helping the students navigate and stay safe in their media world.&nbsp; It is of utmost importance for the teachers to have a routine and take control of the procedures of usage.&nbsp; This can be done through teaching them cell phone etiquette, social agreement signed by student and parent, informing parents, and consistent policies through put the school.<\/li>\n<li>For those students who do not have a phone or permission from their parents you will need alternative method or assignment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ctlonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Bate-Middle-School-cell-phone-User-Agreement.doc\">Bate Middle School cell phone User Agreement<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ctlonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/cell-phone-letter-home.doc\">Cell phone letter home<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ctlonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/vicky-cell-phone-agreement.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"vicky cell phone agreement\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ctlonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/vicky-cell-phone-agreement-289x300.jpg?resize=195%2C200\" height=\"200\" alt=\"vicky cell phone agreement\" width=\"195\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ctlonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/vicky-cell-phone-agreement-2.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"vicky cell phone agreement 2\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ctlonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/vicky-cell-phone-agreement-2-251x300.jpg?resize=165%2C200\" height=\"200\" alt=\"vicky cell phone agreement 2\" width=\"165\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"posterous_quote_citation\">via <a href=\"http:\/\/ctlonline.org\/blog\/?p=1891\">ctlonline.org<\/a><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Striving Readers??? technology grant allowed Bate Middle School (BMS) to step-up their instructional rigor and the motivational level of many students.
