UTIPS - "Name Not Given" Fix

After the test results purge, an unexpected problem surfaced. Each UTIPS user needs to re-associate their login with their account on UTIPS. It's a quick fix, but unfortunately it's one that needs to be done by each user.

UTIPS Data Purge - How to Save Your Test Scores

It has come time again to do a little preventative maintenance on our UTIPS server. We need to delete or purge the test results from all of the tests that you administered in UTIPS over the last year. 

Please be assured that this process will not delete tests, classes or students in UTIPS - only test results. If you feel that you may have a need for this data in the future, you can take a few minutes to save this information for your reference. If you feel that you will not need these test scores, you are not required to archive this information, and you can stop reading this message if you'd like. 

This screencast will detail the process of the steps listed below if you'd like to save these scores:

  1. Head to http://www.utips.sedck12.org and log into your UTIPS account.
  2. Hover your mouse over the 'Reports' menu in the black UTIPS menu, and click 'All Tests'. This will show you a list of all of your test scores taken in the time frame listed in the drop-down menu after 'Show All Tests Posted:'. By default, you are probably only looking at tests given today.
  3. Change the 'Show All Tests Posted:' option to 'All Scores', and UTIPS will show you all of the tests taken by your students over the past year.
  4. Click on an assessment that you'd like to save the scores for. You can see how many times it was taken to the right.
  5. On the top right of the test scores, you'll see two options - one to print the results, and one to export the results. Printing will give you a paper version, and exporting will create a digital version for Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet programs. It is up to you which way you save these scores:
    1. Print Option: Simply wait for the small test score window to refresh with a printable version (PDF). Once this has happened, click the print or printer icon within the mini window to print off those scores - Don't use the File --> Print option for your web browser.
    2. Export Option: Clicking this option will immediately download a .csv file that Excel or Google Spreadsheets can open and view, create charts, etc. To access the file, go to the location where your downloaded files are normally saved - usually your Downloads folder or on the computer Desktop. From there, you can rename (I highly recommend this) this file to a name that makes sense to you, and save it with the other files for that unit or in a folder for your test scores.
  6. To save additional test scores, simply head back to 'Reports --> All Scores' and repeat steps 5 and 6.

Math Benchmark Exams in UTIPS for Iron County

Today, we'll take a look at the benchmark exams available in UTIPS for the math teachers in Iron county. We'll show you an alternate way to access these tests - other than copying the tests to a teachers UTIPS account - which has some vast benefits. 

Access the Iron Math Benchmark Exams here: http://ironmath.utips.sedck12.org - this is the same address that your students will use to access the tests.
Taking a test this way requires that teachers have their students set up in their own UTIPS account ahead of the time that the benchmark exams are taken. The instructions on how to do this are included in this post as the Managing Students.doc - view and download below.

Here's how your teachers and students should be accessing these exams:

Accessing the tests this way not only gives the teacher identified with the detailed login a copy of the test results, but the Iron Math master account gets a copy of the results as well for every student that access the test DISTRICT WIDE. This will allow for more broad data analysis - more data = good!

Hopefully you can see the advantage of students taking these exams. They can provide valuable data and insight as to how students are doing and progressing in their learning. We hope that you will urge your teachers to use these tests and have their students take them, and then using the results to their best advantage.

UTIPS for Math Teachers in Iron County

Today we'll have a UTIPS Refresher training, with some special attention paid to Math teachers who at times need to use custom equations in their questions that, unfortunately, can't be built within UTIPS anymore.

Let's first start off here at my UTIPS Student Page: http://clint.utips.sedck12.org - head there and quickly take the short math quiz that I've prepared for you called Iron Math Test. We'll use the data generated from your results to start our training with a review of the Reports area of your UTIPS accounts.

After the review of the basics (see attached document), we'll show these teachers a few HTML formatting tips & tricks (see attached PDF document), how to use an Online Equation Editor/Generator, and how to use Wolfram Alpha to generate images of equation plots to use in their questions.

UTIPS: Now that the 'Folder' tests on the front page are gone, how do I create my own tests?

You may be a little upset about the change, but the practice exams from the folders on the UTIPS login page are no longer available. This change has come because that although they were convenient, they contained EVERY question in a given objective for a subject and standard - whether that was 20 questions or 200. That is obviously WAY TOO MANY questions to expect your students to effectively work through in any one sitting.
You want a good and accurate measure of your student’s progress, don’t you?
The solution is to make your own tests that cover the exact standard & objective that you want, and has exactly the number of questions that is appropriate for the time that you have. Some of you may have forgotten how to do this very thing - even though every UTIPS training starts off with how to create your own tests.
If you need a little refresher, you can view this 5-minute video that will cover how to use the ‘Cookie Cutter’ to create exactly the test that you want in about 30 seconds. It will also show how to publish the test so that it is available to your students to take, and also how to get YOUR students to YOUR student page where they can find your newly created tests.
